New World Rangiora

MHL are proud to have been involved in the design and implementation of an LED lighting upgrade for the New World Supermarket in Rangiora. MHL worked closely with Pedersen Read Christchurch who developed a lighting solution that replaced an existing dated fluorescent installation to increase both horizontal and vertical light levels which created a bright fresh environment for New World’s customers.

The Trilux E-Line continuous system, with a mixture of wide and double asymmetric optics, was the product of choice for this project. The double asymmetric optics proved particularly useful for the vertical light on to the aisle shelving, lighting the product with excellent accuracy and colour rendition which improves the customer experience and better reflects the colour fidelity of the individual produce/goods.

The project was not without its challenges. The apex ceiling shape was hard to work with at times and due to store operating hours, all work on site was done after hours by Melray Electric. The dark flooring in parts of the store also reduces the reflectance of light. The upgrade has further enhanced the overall look of the store and also resulted in a 50% reduction in power consumption for lighting.

Everyone involved is extremely happy with the outcome, especially the client who is particularly impressed with the way the lighting really improves how the product is displayed, the overall improved visual comfort of the store plus an almost 50% reduction in energy consumption.

Credit also goes to Melray Electric, for doing a great job with the installation.

LED Life

LEDs are not all created equal and there still seems to be confusion in the market in respect of how to determine the performance and life of different LED luminaires.  We thought we’d help shed some light on this by sharing some valuable insights and resources on LED Life.

Unios Universal Light – Edition 2

Unios have just released the 2nd edition of this educational journal.  Among the many interesting articles is the lead story titled ‘The Meaning of LED Life’ written by our own MHL National Product Manager, Mark Kirkham. In this article, Mark provides guidance on assessing the long-term performance of LED products. Use the links below to learn more

‘TO B OR NOT TO B’ … that is the question’!

Leading on from the above is the evolution of the metrics used to define LED life.  It seems as if the ‘B’ metric may be on the way out, or is it? The following information might help to answer that question.

There remains confusion and debate in the market with respect to life metrics for LED luminaires. So let’s take a closer look at the two options; L-Metric and B-Metric.

‘L’ Metric

The primary life metric has always been, and remains, the ‘L’ metric. Per IEC 62722, the ‘L’ metric quantifies the luminous flux degradation after a certain period of time.

  • Lx where ‘x’ denotes the predicted percentage of the initial luminous flux of 50% of the LED population (median) after a certain period of time
    • For example: L70 50,000hrs – luminous flux output of 50% of the LED population (median) has reduced to 70% of initial after 50,000 hrs operation
  • IEC defines this as ‘Median Useful Life’
  • This is effectively Lx B50  if the B Metric (below) was to be included

‘B’ Metric

The IEC has also introduced a second ‘B’ metric in an attempt to further define the ‘L’ metric.

  • Lx By where ‘y’ denotes an alternative proportion of the LED population at which the luminous flux has degraded after a certain period of time
    • For example: L70 B10 50,000hrs – luminous flux output when only the first 10% of the LED population has reduced to 70% of initial after 50,000 hrs operation

Whilst IEC 62722-2-1 defines this By, it does not prescribe how this is derived.  In the absence of this, there is a wide variation in how this is assessed and corresponding inconsistency in the life claims made incorporating it.

Unfortunately, there has been no consistency across manufacturers in the way life predictions are reported. Many manufacturers only provide ‘L’ metrics (ie: no B metric).  As noted above, in the absence of the second ‘B’ metric these are deemed to be ‘B50’. Many other manufacturers only quote life at other ‘B’ values … ‘B10’ being the most common. This inconsistency creates confusion and prevents accurate performance comparisons between products.

Lighting Europe: Evaluating performance of LED based luminaires – Guidance Paper

Lighting Europe is an industry association that represents the European lighting industry. With over 1000 members, including many of the larger lighting manufacturers (including TRILUX), Lighting Europe’s aim is to advocate and influence European lighting policies and standards.

Lighting Europe has recently released a report to provide guidance in the evaluation of the performance of LED luminaires.

Until recently, many people have believed there to be a large difference in life hours at different B values. It is therefore very interesting to see this guide has concluded there is actually no statistically relevant difference between Lx B50 & Lx B10 figures. On the basis of this, many manufacturers are reverting to reporting lifetimes without a B metric.

We believe this is a great step forward as it will simplify performance reporting and provide a common basis upon which real apples-for-apples performance comparisons can be made.

Note, this guidance paper is not a standard but does however represent the collective belief of the 1000+ lighting manufacturer members of Lighting Europe. It is quite likely the findings from this will be incorporated into IEC standards in the future.

TRILUX Roadshow & New Products

MHL were excited to host our German friends in June for a national roadshow. Manfred Jander, TRILUX’s Export Manager for our region, visited us for nine days covering Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Wellington and Christchurch.

The roadshow launched two exciting new TRILUX product ranges, the E-Line NEXT which is the evolution of the already very successful E-Line linear range and Sonnos, a new comprehensive range of downlights with over 70,000 permutations!

TRILUX E-Line NEXT

E-Line Next, a trunking based linear lighting system, boasts an industry-leading 190 lumens (delivered) / watt (input) and 15 optics which gives incredible flexibility for multiple applications.

Some of the other highlights include:

  • 3 trunking options
  • 230,000+ permutations
  • L80 70,000 hr life

TRILUX Sonnos

The Sonnos range also impressed and has been designed to mimic natural daylight, hence the name taken from the German word for sun ‘Sonne’. Sonnos is perfect for a wide range of commercial and institutional applications where quality of light and flexibility are critical.

Some of the other highlights include:

  • Round or square in 4 sizes
  • Trimmed, trimless, surface and suspended mounting options
  • 70,000+ possible permutations
  • L90 50,000 hr / L80 70,000 hr life

Overall, the roadshow was a huge success and the new products were very well received. And we gave our German guest some good ‘ol kiwi hospitality with a round of golf and a wine or two. We’re already looking forward to his next trip in November 2020.

Westpac Flagship Store in Christchurch

MHL worked closely with Context Architects on the new Westpac Flagship store in Christchurch. The intent was to create an environment which reaches out and shares the space with the city around it. This was achieved through using lighting to create a tree canopy dapple and cascade to meet a sculptural seating and task area below.

We helped Context Architects create an environment with a point of difference through lighting. To do this, we used the Prolicht Invader surface and suspended cans with using Aphrodite Red corona reflector to tie in Westpac’s corporate identity. The project team and client were thrilled with the outcome and how it brings a point of difference to the space.

Aphrodite Red is one of the 30 standard colours Prolicht offer which are manufactured and dispatched to NZ within 3-weeks.

Les Mills Auckland City

NZ’s largest gym makeover to date.

MHL are proud to have been part of the project team for the major redevelopment of Auckland City’s most prominent gym/fitness facility. The project involved adding three new studios to the Les Mills Auckland City Campus.

Aurecon (electrical engineering and lighting design) and Knight Associates (Interior Design) took a very intentional approach with the design of the space. Complementing the extraordinary finishes are carefully selected narrow beam fixtures, producing the desired lighting effect from seemingly discreet light sources.

The end result: A dynamic, dramatic and energetic environment for members.

Among the products that have contributed to this result are:

  • 95x Prolicht Bioniq Recessed Downlights used in the Immersive Fitness Cycle Studio
  • 63x Unios Azure Recessed Steplights in the Immersive Fitness Cycle Studio
  • 37x Oktalite Canilo Plus Narrow Beam Track Lights – Boxing and Functional Studios

Wanaka Recreation Car Park

Bringing light to a Wanaka community area.

MHL worked closely with Baxter Design Group, of Queenstown and Cosgroves Electrical Engineers on this extensive project for the benefit of the greater Wanaka Community.

The WE-EF PFL Street and Area Luminaire was chosen because of the excellent carpark distribution optic, to maximise the coverage of light, using the minimum number of poles. The PFL was then complimented with the Aluminium Sapa pole in its raw finish.

Sapa was chosen because of its engaging environmental story, using 95% recycled aluminium and with also not having to be painted, the raw linished finish offers a clean modern look, with almost zero maintenance over its extensive long life.

Embracing Queenstown Council’s strict Dark Sky policy provided a challenge, with the inground tree uplighters. A detailed design was required to perfectly provide illumination where it was required, but more importantly, to not create light pollution beyond the trees.

The final installed solution provides zero upward waste spill light in the carpark, at thesame time as giving the Council and the asset operators, safe egress for both vehicle and pedestrian movements around the Centre and also delivers piece of mind for many years to come.
