OVERVIEW
As part of the largest civic upgrade in Dunedin in a generation, George Street has been transformed into a people-focused, pedestrian-priority destination. Spanning four city blocks, the redesign improves accessibility, introduces extensive planting, and creates a welcoming environment for people of all ages and abilities.
Led by Dunedin City Council and designers from Jasmax, the project integrates public art, te ao Māori design principles, and flexible infrastructure to support events, alfresco dining, and play — all while reflecting the city’s unique cultural identity.

LIGHTING SOLUTION
MHL was engaged to supply lighting solutions that would complement the upgraded public realm and ensure George Street felt as safe and inviting at night as it does during the day.
We worked closely with the project team to deliver a mix of street, area and accent lighting that integrates seamlessly into the redesigned environment.
Key priorities included minimising glare, supporting visibility in shared spaces, and ensuring durability for long-term performance in a high-use urban setting.
Lighting also plays a key role in enhancing the overall experience of the space — highlighting cultural elements, increasing comfort, and helping to define different zones and uses throughout the precinct.

PRODUCTS
A tailored mix of robust, architectural-grade luminaires was supplied to meet both aesthetic and functional requirements. Products were selected for their optical performance, low glare, and ability to blend into the surrounding materials and streetscape design.
RESULTS
George Street is now a more inclusive, vibrant and flexible city space — one that locals and visitors alike can enjoy day and night. The lighting contributes to a safe and welcoming atmosphere, supports the street’s new identity, and plays a key role in bringing the city centre to life after dark.
