Anzac Memorial Cenotaph at Cromwell Memorial Hall

OVERVIEW

The Anzac memorial cenotaph at Cromwell Memorial Hall & Event Centre called for a carefully controlled lighting solution. The memorial needed to be illuminated clearly while minimising light spill, with different areas receiving different levels of light.

We supplied a WE-EF FLC Gobo projector, produced the custom motifs, and provided onsite commissioning and support. The installation was completed in early April 2026, ahead of Anzac Day.

THE BRIEF

The project team required precise illumination of the memorial rather than a broad wash of light. Light needed to remain within the intended area, and the distribution across the memorial was not uniform.

Selected parts of the memorial required 100% illumination, while others required only 10%. The lighting equipment and motif therefore needed to control both the outline of the projected light and the illumination level within individual parts of that projection.

THE APPROACH

We selected the WE-EF FLC Gobo as the focus product for the installation. The projector provided a platform for placing light accurately across the memorial from the available mounting location.

To achieve the specified illumination pattern, we produced a custom etched-glass motif. Different sections of the glass were created with different levels of transparency. This controlled how much light passed through each area, producing the required combination of full and reduced illumination within a single projected composition.

Our scope covered the supply of the luminaire, production of the motifs, and onsite commissioning and support. Onsite involvement allowed the projector’s targeting to be set against the completed memorial and its actual mounting position.

CHALLENGES

The projector could not be installed directly in front of the memorial. Instead, it had to be mounted on the underside of a canopy positioned to one side.

This created an offset projection angle. The luminaire, motif and final targeting needed to work together so that the required areas aligned with the memorial when viewed from the side-mounted projector position.

The differentiated transparency in the etched glass also had to preserve the intended balance between the areas requiring 100% illumination and those requiring 10%.

RESULTS

The project has been very well received by the client.

What makes the installation particularly unique is that the entire lighting effect is achieved with a single 37 W luminaire located 24 metres from the memorial. A custom etched-glass motif was developed to shape and direct the light exactly where it was needed, creating a tailored illumination pattern that enhances the memorial's key features. Precise aiming and commissioning overcame the challenges of the offset canopy mounting position, resulting in a clean and highly effective final outcome.
