OVERVIEW
Dunkin Donuts is located in the Auckland International Airport arrivals hall. The tenancy sits within a high‑traffic public environment and required lighting that would support brand visibility while remaining appropriate for an airport retail setting. MHL assisted with the lighting design and style alongside DMC Interiors, with Dennis Clotworthy leading the interior design.

THE BRIEF
The lighting brief focused on using colour and contrast to help the Dunkin Donuts brand stand out within the arrivals hall. The design intent was to create visual interest at the service counter and customer areas, while maintaining good glare control. High colour rendering was identified as a key design requirement to help the colours of the donuts and interior finishes appear vibrant and accurate under artificial light.
THE APPROACH
MHL provided product advice and design assistance, supporting the selection of luminaires that balanced visual impact with controlled illumination. Unios Ion S spotlights on track were used to provide focused accent lighting throughout the space. Above the main counter, an Austube 45 Greenstar 3 Slot extrusion with glare control louvre was specified and finished in pink to align with Dunkin Donuts branding. High CRI output was used intentionally to enhance colour presentation.
CHALLENGES
The primary challenge was visibility. Located within the arrivals hall, the store needed to attract attention among surrounding retail and hospitality outlets while avoiding excessive glare in a busy public circulation area.
RESULTS
The completed lighting supports brand recognition and helps the store stand out within the airport environment. The combination of colour‑matched feature lighting, high colour rendering, and controlled accent lighting reinforces the interior design intent and contributes to a clear customer experience.
